- Where To Go
My Son Sanctuary, containing somewhat 70 ruined and abandoned Hindu temples and tombs, was built by Champa Kings between 4th and 14th Century AD. These temples here once were the place for the royal family of Champa to remember their ancestors and worship their Gods. Plus the wild nature of the place, My Son creates a wonderful scene for people visiting the Holy place.
A unique beautiful sanctuary world has been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. My Son is set in a lush jungle valley ringed by mountains belonging to Duy Phu Commune, Quang Nam Province, about 40km from Hoi An City. Of the 225 Cham vestiges that are founded in Viet Nam, My Son possesses 71 monuments and 32 epitaphs, the content of which is still being studied.
All of the buildings are made up of fired brick with stone pillars and have sandstone bas-reliefs showing scenes from Hindu mythology, except for one – labeled B1, which was made of stone. The architecture of My Son is derived from India. There were small niches for lamps and the Shivalingam, representing the spirit world, is in the center of the room. The roofs, suarloka, were originally covered in gold or silver leaf and separated from the towers by a decorated frieze. The well-planned, symbolic, and complete architectural design presented at My Son demonstrates that it was an important site to the Cham people living there.
Walking between ancient buildings is like travelling into the past and sometimes you even find the temples all to yourselves. Such a beautiful experience!
